Stay Somewhere With a Story
Nestled in the heart of Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, the Historic Wayside Inn has been welcoming travelers to Middletown since 1797.
For more than two centuries, guests have gathered, celebrated, dined, and rested within these walls. Today, the Wayside continues that tradition with the same sense of warmth and hospitality that has made this historic inn a special place to stay for generations.
A Stay Unlike Any Other
No two rooms at the Wayside are quite the same. Our 22 individually decorated guest rooms are filled with historic character, period details, and antique furnishings, each with its own personality and story.
Here, history isn’t something you simply come to see. It’s something you get to stay in.
Settle in for a quiet weekend in the Shenandoah Valley, enjoy dinner just downstairs at Clem’s Kitchen, wander through historic Middletown, or simply slow down and enjoy the charm of a place that has welcomed generations of travelers before you.
More Than a Place to Stay
Over the years, the Wayside Inn has become part of countless stories, from weekend getaways and family traditions to weddings, celebrations, and return visits year after year. Our historic gathering spaces continue to offer a one-of-a-kind setting for moments both intimate and grand.
And no stay at the Wayside is complete without gathering around the table. Located right here at the inn, Clem’s Kitchen is a welcoming, from-scratch restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, dinner, and Sunday brunch throughout the week. Whether you’re starting your morning before exploring the Shenandoah Valley, settling in for dinner after a day away, or joining us for a leisurely weekend brunch, you don’t have to venture far for a good meal.
Come Stay Awhile
Some places are simply where you spend the night. Others become part of the reason you traveled in the first place. Come experience the history, character, and hospitality of the Wayside Inn for yourself.

Shared with us the rich history and paranormal experiences. Saw the prohibition speakeasy, trap door, original brick and wood, and even got goosebumps in the dining room. Felt like electricity..like I was being watched.Posted on Google Abror KaiumovTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Thank you so much for the wonderful stay. We will be back MANY MANY more times, TRUST ME! 10 STARS!!Posted on Google John WalterTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Architecture, furniture, and decor are all from another century. Very historic and extremely atmospheric. Antiques everywhere including the guest rooms. Excellent restaurant with a small menu for breakfast and dinner.Posted on Google Stargazer (Night Sky)Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. This is a lovely old historic inn. It is furnished with antiques and unique items. There are several rooms to hang out in and a cute little self-serve coffee/tea bar. The staff was super-friendly, helpful, and informative. The seasonal decorations were festive and spirited. Taking a point off for the room because there were some issues with the bedding. There was food stuck to the bedskirt, stains on the coverlet and crumbs on the night table - otherwise the room was very clean.Posted on Google P MTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We recently celebrated our wedding reception at the Wayside Inn, and it was nothing short of magical. This beautiful historic inn is full of character, charm, and timeless elegance—every corner of the property tells a story, and it provided the perfect setting for our special day. What truly set the experience apart was the amazing staff, especially Brittany, the property manager. From the very beginning, Brittany was attentive, organized, and incredibly kind. She guided us through the planning process with professionalism and genuine care, making sure every detail was just right. On the day of the event, she and her team made everything run seamlessly—we didn’t have to worry about a thing. Our guests couldn’t stop raving about the venue. The indoor spaces were warm and inviting, and the outdoor areas were just stunning—ideal for photos. The combination of the inn’s historical charm and the team’s hospitality created an atmosphere that felt both elegant and personal. If you're looking for a wedding venue that’s rich in history, beautifully maintained, and staffed by people who truly care, we can’t recommend the Wayside Inn and Brittany enough. It was everything we hoped for and more.
